Bija is engaged on a case-by-case basis, but generally we work on retainer and we receive a piece of the transaction if there is business development, fundraising, or licensing involved.
Our world-class strategic advisors subcontract work wherever possible in order to keep costs low, and we have a large network of affiliates who perform services such as trademark search, patent research, market research, financial modeling, analysis, and the like. We can also project manage our client’s preferred vendors, and we have found that to be a win-win for both our client and their vendor, who generally appreciate our know-how and efficiency.
We have had a vast array of clients over the years. The following exemplifies our diverse engagements:
R&D Lab - hired us for Patent Strategy and to review their 30+ patent assets. We assisted with an IP inventory, and proceeded with mapping their space, led discussions about their market strategy, assisted with go/no go decisions on international filings, evaluated assets for market viability, selected assets for licensing, and wrote a business plan for a spin off. We successfully licensed technology into Microsoft, Ebay, and into several well known mid-cap firms.
Private Equity Firm - hired us for due diligence on technology assets, including patents, trade secrets, and more. We evaluated the technology, the patents, the viability, scalability, and strength of the offering. We performed a market review, we hired patent researchers, we interviewed the leadership team, we evaluated the technology on site, met with customers, and reported all findings. We made recommendations and assisted post-acquisition with execution including filing more patents, protecting trade secrets, and brand strategy.
Entrepreneur - was midway through deal negotiation with a global manufacturer, and wanted to know if he was getting a fair price. We reviewed his deal points in the negotiation and found many important business factors were not included in the proposed legal agreement even though he was working with a standard document and a top attorney. We assisted him to also entertain a competitive bid so as to have more than one potential outcome, and to improve his negotiating power. We assisted him to define and protect his trade secrets, and we helped him create a sustainable business model in consulting around his licensed inventions.
Mid-cap Company - this Company had a globally distributed product that was generating tens of millions per year in large volumes of orders across both the enterprise and the consumer personal computing space. Their product had a shelf life of about 3 to 5 more years, and the Founder had retired. They hired us to assist them with a strategy for their R&D assets, which were robust but diverse and completely dis-related to their existing product and sales channels. We assisted with strategy, international filings, roadmaping, etc. We brought in an investment bank to spin off one asset, and we assisted to fly out to top potential M&A candidates to shop the IP. The firm ended up spinning up an additional brand, saved a lot of time and money, and also had a transaction.
A Rock Star - this individual had “retired” but still had plenty of entrepreneurial verve. We assisted him to develop his personal brand, to license a toy, to establish himself in a new vertical through tie ins to his music career, and to partner with a media/entertainment company to develop & license content. We also helped him connect to his fan base leveraging social media technology.
Our partners have licensed technology into almost every major vertical that is commonly known, with deals into Lucent/Bell Labs, LB, Prudential, Blackrock, Principal Financial Group, Microsoft, Ebay, Intel, Proctor & Gamble, Allstate, Disney, Neiman Marcus, LiveNation, Ford Motor Company, Hewlett Packard, Dell, Asus, Samsung, Acer, and more.
